Why a call to the Bahamas fails
Your exit code comes before the code
Most countries dial an exit code before a number abroad, such as 00 in Europe. The Bahamas shares +1 with the US and Canada, so callers there just dial 1 and the number, with no exit code at all.
An old number still shows 809
Until 1 October 1996, Bahamas numbers used the shared code 809. A contact's old 809 number no longer reaches the Bahamas; dial +1 242 instead.
