Which format to choose
You start with an MP3 audio converter, because most people convert audio to MP3. Pick one of these audio formats under To when you need another.
| Format | What it is and when to use it |
|---|---|
| MP3 | The lossy format that plays almost everywhere: phones, cars, browsers, and old players. At 192 kbps it is about 1.4 MB per minute. Pick it and you have an MP3 converter. Audio from a video works too. |
| WAV | Lossless and uncompressed, written as 16-bit. About 10 MB per minute at 44.1 kHz stereo. Use it for audio editors, samplers, and forms that ask for WAV. |
| M4A (AAC) | Lossy AAC sound in an MP4 container, the usual format on Apple devices. At 160 kbps it is about 1.2 MB per minute. |
| FLAC | Lossless and compressed, often about half the size of WAV. Use it to keep a music collection at full quality in less space. |
| OGG (Opus) | A modern lossy codec that stays clear at low bitrates, always at 48 kHz. At 128 kbps it is about 1 MB per minute. Use it for the web and for voice. |
| Original | The format that already holds the file's audio is marked Original. Pick it to copy the original audio with no re-encoding, so the sound does not change. Use it to take the sound out of a video at full quality. |
Before you convert
Lossy and lossless
MP3, M4A, and OGG are lossy: they remove sound you are unlikely to hear, and the file gets small. WAV and FLAC are lossless: they keep every sample. Choose lossless when you will edit the file again.
Bitrate and file size
Bitrate and file size go together. Double the bitrate and the file doubles. Small file suits speech, Standard suits most music, and High suits music you want to keep.
Lossy to lossless adds nothing
An MP3 converted to WAV or FLAC gets bigger, but the lost detail does not come back. Start from the best source file you have.
Batch conversion
Drop a whole folder for batch conversion. Each file gets its own row and its own player, and Download all saves every result. The options apply to every file in the list. Trim shows only when the list has one file.
Questions
- What is an audio converter?
- An audio converter changes a sound file from one format to another, for example WAV to MP3. This audio file converter also takes the sound out of a video.
- Does my audio file get uploaded to a server?
- No. Your file converts on your device with the browser's WebCodecs API and the Mediabunny library. No network request carries the file.
- Which audio format has the best quality?
- WAV and FLAC are lossless, so they keep the full quality of the source. Among lossy formats, Opus and AAC need a lower bitrate than MP3 for the same sound. A converted file can never sound better than its source.
- What is the difference between lossy and lossless audio?
- Lossy audio removes some sound to make the file small. Lossless audio keeps every sample, so the file is larger and can give back the exact original.
- Can I convert many audio files at once?
- Yes. Drop as many files as you need. They all get the same format and quality, and Download all saves them together.
- Does the converter work without internet?
- You need a connection to open the converter. The conversion itself does not use the connection: it runs on your device and sends nothing.
- Is this audio converter really free?
- Yes. It is a free audio converter with no sign-up, no ads, no daily limit, and no file size cap set by us. Your device memory is the only limit.
- How do I convert WAV to FLAC?
- Drop the WAV files, pick FLAC under To, and press Convert. WAV to FLAC is lossless, so the sound stays the same and the file gets smaller.
Is it private?
Yes. Most online audio converter sites upload your file to a server first. This free audio to MP3 converter does not: your files never leave this device. Privacy matters here, because many files are voice memos, meetings, or recorded calls.
