Start every international call with an exit code or +
International dialing starts with the exit code, also called the international call prefix. A landline dials the exit code of its country, and a mobile types +
On a landline, dial your country's exit code
- 00186 countriesUK, Germany, France, and 183 more
- 01126 countriesUSA, Canada, American Samoa, and 23 more

- 00113 countriesAustralia, Christmas Island, and Cocos Islands
In 16 countries, such as Brazil, there is no single exit code: its digits also choose the phone company that carries the call, as 0021 or 0015 do in Brazil
On a mobile, type + instead
Press and hold 0 to type +. It works from every country, so a mobile never needs an exit code

- Nothing happens when you dialCall barring is on in your phoneTurn off call barring, usually under Settings, then Calls
- A wrong number answers, or nothing ringsYou dialed the exit code of another countryType + instead of an exit code
- You hear the number is not in serviceThe 0 the number starts with at home is still inLeave out that 0 after the country code. Italian landlines keep it
- Every call abroad failsYour prepaid balance is too low for a call abroadTop up, then call again

How do I make an international call?
Dial the exit code of the country you are in, then the country code of the one you call, then the number.
That is how to call internationally from a landline. The exit code depends on where you are: 011 in the United States and Canada, 00 in most of the world, and 0011 in Australia.
How to call international numbers depends on the country code: 52 for Mexico and 91 for India. Leave out the 0 that some numbers start with at home.
How to make an international call from a cell phone?
On a mobile, press and hold 0 to type +, then dial the country code and the number.
The + stands for the exit code, so the same number works from any country. It is how to dial internationally, how to call abroad, or how to call overseas, with no exit code to look up.
Check that your plan allows international calls. If it does not, the call does not connect.
How to make an international call on iPhone or Android?
Press and hold 0 until + appears, then dial the country code and the number.
It works the same in the Phone app on iPhone, Google's, and Samsung's, with no setting to change.
Save a contact abroad with + in front of the number, and it works from any country.
Can I make international calls for free?
Only when both sides have the same app and a data connection.
WhatsApp, FaceTime, and similar apps call other users of the app. They cannot ring a landline or a phone without the app.
To ring any number, a call goes over the phone network, which costs by the minute. Suparelay does it from your browser, from cents a minute.
Does WhatsApp charge for international calls?
No, a call to another WhatsApp user is free, but WhatsApp cannot call a phone number at all.
It rings only people who have WhatsApp and a data connection. A mobile number, a landline, or your bank cannot be called from it.
To ring any phone number, use Suparelay: it calls landlines and mobiles abroad from your browser, from cents a minute, with nothing to install on either side.
How much is an international call per minute?
It depends on the country you call and on how you call it.
