How a mic tuner works
- 1
Press Start and allow the microphone. Open the Tuning list and pick your instrument and its tuning.
- 2
Play one open string. The nearest string lights up, and you see the note, the needle, the cents, and the frequency in Hz.
- 3
Turn the peg until the needle sits in the middle and you see In tune. Tune up means the string is flat. Tune down means it is sharp.
Instrument presets
Each preset knows the strings of one instrument, so the string you play lights up on its own
| Instrument | Strings in the Tuning list |
|---|---|
| Guitar | Standard E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4, plus half step down, drop D, D standard, drop C, open G, open D, and DADGAD |
| Bass | 4 string E1 A1 D2 G2, 5 string with a low B0, drop D, and D standard |
| Ukulele | Standard G4 C4 E4 A4, low G, D tuning, and baritone D3 G3 B3 E4 |
| Violin and mandolin | G3 D4 A4 E5 for both. A mandolin has pairs of strings on these notes, so the violin notes also give you a mandolin tuner |
| Viola and cello | Viola C3 G3 D4 A4. Cello C2 G2 D3 A3, one octave below the viola |
| Banjo | Open G: G4 D3 G3 B3 D4. The short fifth string is the high G4 |

Noise and mic placement
An instrument tuner hears the whole room. Hold the phone or the laptop 20 to 30 cm from the instrument, and turn off fans, music, and the TV.
A4 calibration
The A4 pitch list sets A4 from 432 to 446 Hz. Keep 440 Hz unless your band or orchestra uses another A. Many orchestras in Europe use 442 Hz.
One string at a time
Rest your hand on the other strings so they stay quiet. Pluck once and let the note ring. The first moment of a pluck is a little sharp, so read the steady part.
Hear the note first
Tap a string button to play its reference tone. Tune by ear to that tone, then check the needle and the cents.
Questions
- What is a tuner?
- It is a tool that names the note you play and shows how far it is from that note, in cents. One cent is one hundredth of a half step. You get a free tuner online that does the job with the microphone in your browser.
- Which instruments can I tune?
- The Tuning list has presets for guitar, bass, ukulele, violin, viola, cello, banjo, and mandolin. For instruments with no strings, such as a flute, a trumpet, or a voice, open the chromatic tuner in the list below. It reads any note.
- How accurate is it?
- The reading is only as clean as the sound that reaches the mic. The reading rounds to whole cents, and you see In tune within 5 cents of the string. Noise, a far mic, or two strings at once make the needle jump.
- Why does it not hear my instrument?
- Check that suparelay.app may use the microphone and that no other app holds it. Move closer and play louder. If nothing moves in the mic test either, fix the microphone first.
- What is A440?
- A440 means the note A4 sounds at 440 Hz. Most music tunes to it, and every other note is set from it. Change it in the A4 pitch list only to match a group that tunes higher or lower.
- How do I tune a cello?
- Pick Cello: C G D A in the Tuning list. Tune the A string to A3, 220 Hz, then D3, G2, and C2. Use the pegs for big changes and the small screws on the tailpiece for the last few cents. This preset gives you a cello tuner.
- How do I tune a banjo?
- Pick Banjo open G. Tune the fourth string to D3, then G3, B3, and D4. Tune the short fifth string last, to G4. The open G preset gives you a banjo tuner with a button for each of the five strings.
- How do I use the Google tuner?
- Search Google for the word, allow the microphone, and play. It shows a note and a needle. You also get an A4 setting, tunings for eight instruments, and the cents as a number.
Is it private?
Yes. The Web Audio API listens inside this tab. No sound is sent, recorded, or saved, and the microphone stops when you press Stop or close the tab.
