How to tune a guitar
- 1
Press Start and allow the microphone. Pick Standard, Drop D, or another tuning in the Tuning list.
- 2
Pluck one open string. The button of that string lights up, and the cents show next to the needle.
- 3
Turn the peg until you see In tune. Tune up to the note: if you go past it, drop below and come up again, so the string holds.

Guitar tuning tips
Acoustic and electric
An acoustic guitar is loud enough for any phone. Play an electric guitar through an amp at low volume, or unplugged with the mic close to the strings. The same tunings work as an acoustic guitar tuner and as an electric guitar tuner, with no change.
Alternate tunings
Open G tuning is D G D G B D, often used for slide. DADGAD tuning is D A D G A D, common in folk music. The list also has half step down, drop D, D standard, drop C, and open D. Pick one and the string buttons change to its notes.
12 string pairs
A 12 string guitar has six pairs. Tune the main string of each pair with the Standard tuning. The B and high E pairs repeat the same note. The other four pairs add an octave string: E3, A3, D4, and G4. Tune those on the chromatic tuner, which reads any note.
If no note shows
Rest a hand on the other strings and pluck a little harder. Keep the phone 20 to 30 cm from the sound hole. If nothing moves, check the microphone with the mic test.
Questions
- What are the guitar string notes?
- In standard tuning the notes are E A D G B E, from the thick low E to the thin high E. Many players remember them as Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie.
- How do I tell if a string is sharp or flat?
- Pluck it and look at the needle and the cents. A minus number and Tune up mean the string is flat, below the note. A plus number and Tune down mean it is sharp, above the note.
- What is drop D tuning?
- Drop D lowers the 6th string from E2 to D2, so the strings are D A D G B E. The other five strings stay as in standard. Pick Drop D in the Tuning list to get a drop D tuner.
- How do I tune a 12 string guitar?
- The Tuning list has no separate 12 string guitar tuner. Tune the six main strings in standard tuning, then tune each partner, as the tip about pairs shows.
- Can I use an online tuner with an electric guitar?
- Yes. Play it through an amp at low volume, or play it unplugged with the mic close to the strings. Turn off distortion and effects, because they add extra tones that confuse the reading.
- What affects tuning accuracy?
- Room noise, a far mic, and other strings that ring. Heat and humidity also move the neck. Old strings confuse a tuner. Guitar strings lose their true pitch as they age, so change them when the notes sound dull.
- Does Google have a guitar tuner?
- Google shows one when you search for it, with a note and a needle. It has no tunings and no A4 setting. In the browser you get eight tunings, an A4 setting, and the cents as a number, so you need no free guitar tuner app.
Is it private?
Yes. This guitar tuner online free of ads reads the sound inside this tab with the Web Audio API. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and the microphone stops when you close the tab.
