How to check your pitch

How to read the result
Each part of the result answers one question about the note you sing

| Note name | The letter of the nearest note. Sharp and flat name the notes between the letters. C# is C sharp, one half step above C. |
| Octave | The number after the letter. Middle C is C4, and A4 is the A above it. Note names and octaves together point to one key on a piano. |
| Cents | One half step has 100 cents. A minus number is flat and a plus number is sharp. Switch to Tune mode to see cents and Hz for any note. |
| Hz | The frequency of the sound. A4 is 440 Hz and A3 is 220 Hz. Each octave up doubles the number. |
| Pitch history line | The last 10 seconds of your voice, drawn over note lanes. A flat line is a steady note, and a gap is a breath. A voice pitch analyzer or a vocal pitch monitor shows the same kind of line. |

Tips for a steady reading
Why the reading jumps
Vibrato, a breath, or a sound in the room moves the note for a moment. Sing a straight tone when you check a note, and let the line settle.
One voice at a time
The detector follows one clear pitch. A second voice, a piano, or a TV makes it switch notes. Turn other sound off before you sing.
Keep a steady distance
Hold the phone or the laptop about an arm length away, at mouth height. Too close makes each breath loud. Too far lets the room in.
Listen to the reference tone
Press Hear it to play the target as a reference tone. Listen first, then sing. This is pitch matching, the base of all pitch training.

- What is pitch?
- Pitch is how high or low a sound is. A fast vibration has a high pitch and a high number in Hz. Singers name a pitch by its note, such as G3 or E4.
- How does a pitch detector work?
- The browser takes short pieces of the microphone sound and counts how many times the wave repeats each second. That count is the frequency in Hz. The detector then names the nearest note and measures the cents to it. A pitch finder or a note detector works the same way.
- How do I know if I am singing in tune?
- Pick a note, press Hear it, and sing. Within 25 cents, you see how many seconds you stay on pitch. If not, you see how many cents flat or sharp you are. That is how to sing in tune with a singing tuner: hear the note, sing it, and correct by the number.
- How many cents off is out of tune?
- There is no one rule. Sources on singing name 5 to 12 cents for a held note. Tune mode says In tune within 5 cents. Sing mode counts 25 cents as on pitch, because a voice wavers more than a string.
- What instruments does a pitch detector work with?
- Any instrument that plays one note at a time: a voice, a whistle, a flute, a violin, a trumpet, or one guitar string. A chord has many notes, so the reading jumps. For strings, switch to Tune.
- What is the most accurate app for detecting vocal pitch?
- No app suits every voice. Look for a cents number, a line that shows how steady you are, and a reference tone. This online pitch detector has all three and works as a singing pitch checker, so you need no pitch detector app and no account.
- Can I find the pitch of a song file?
- No. Only the microphone is read; a recording or a file cannot be loaded. Play the song out loud, hum the melody one note at a time, and read each note as you hum.
