+249 explained
The Sudan country code, 249, is what you dial before a Sudan number when you call from abroad. It is also known as the Sudan dialing code, Sudan calling code, or Sudan phone code. In the Sudan phone number format, +249 comes first, then the area code, such as 153 for Khartoum, then the local number.

Sudan phone number types
The first digits of a Sudan number tell you what kind of number it is: a landline, a mobile, a free number, or one that costs more to call. Here is a sample of each type of Sudan phone number, as dialed inside Sudan and from abroad.

“As-salām ˤalaykom”
It means peace be upon you. No source names a phone-only greeting, so this is Sudan's everyday Arabic greeting.

Questions about +249
Which country is +249?
+249, or country code 249, belongs to Sudan. No other country dials it.
What is +249?
+249 is the part you dial before a Sudanese number when you call from another country, in place of the leading 0, as in +249 153 123456 for a Khartoum landline.
Is the SD country code the same as +249?
No. SD is the ISO code of Sudan, used in forms and address fields. The number you dial is +249.
What is the difference between +249 and 00249?
The + stands for your exit code. 00 is the exit code in Sudan, Europe, and most of the world, so 00249 and +249 reach the same number there. From the US and Canada, dial 011 249 instead.
Do I drop the 0 after +249?
Yes. The 0 at the start of a Sudanese number works only inside Sudan. Drop it and dial +249 153 123456, not +249 0153 123456.
Can I text a +249 number?
Yes. Write the number as +249 without its first 0, so a Khartoum number reads +249 153 123456, and your phone sends the text abroad at your carrier's international rate.
How much does it cost to call Sudan?
A call to a Sudanese mobile costs more than a call to a landline. The dialer on this page shows the exact price of the number you enter before you call.
Does South Sudan use the same country code as Sudan?
No. South Sudan dialed +249 only until 1 October 2011. It now has its own code, +211.
