Mic Test: Check Your Microphone Online, Free
A mic test checks the microphone this browser can hear, free and with nothing to install
- Free
- Nothing to install
- Audio stays on your device
What this microphone test checks
Press Test my mic and the page asks for microphone permission. The input level meter moves as you speak, and it is a relative level, not a calibrated decibel reading. You can then record and playback a short clip while choosing an input device by its name. An online mic test does this in the browser, and a mic test online does the same job on a computer or a phone.
What to say for a mic check
Say one sentence you know, such as today is a good day to test my microphone. A mic check is easier when the words stay the same, so you can hear echo and background noise.
Record and play
A mic test record lasts about ten seconds, then mic test playback plays that clip in this tab. Record and playback never leaves the browser.
On a phone
On a phone, press Test my mic and allow the microphone. Hold the phone as you would on a call. Safari on iPhone starts audio only after that tap, and Chrome on Android does the same. Use the page to test mic before a meeting, and to test my mic when you want the words to come back.
When the meter stays flat
Three causes cover almost every silent meter
Microphone permission
A blocked microphone permission leaves the meter at zero. Allow this site, or reset the permission, then press Test my mic.
The wrong input
A headset and a built-in microphone are both listed after you allow access. Pick the one you are speaking into.
The system mute
Windows and macOS can mute an input while the browser still has permission. Unmute it in the system sound settings, then speak again.
Set the mic on your system
Where each system and browser keeps the microphone setting
Windows 10 and Windows 11
To test microphone Windows 11, open Settings, then System, then Sound, and pick the input. Raise its volume if the meter stays flat. To test microphone Windows 10, open Settings, then System, then Sound, and choose the input there too. Unmute the microphone in the taskbar if the icon shows a slash.
macOS
Open System Settings, then Sound, then Input, and pick the microphone. If that meter stays still while you speak, the mute key is on or the wrong device is selected.

Chrome and Edge
Click the lock icon in the address bar and set the microphone to Allow. Edge uses the same control. If the list is empty, this site is blocked for the address.

Safari
On a Mac, open Safari settings, then Websites, then Microphone, and set this site to Allow. On iPhone and iPad the prompt appears when you press Test my mic, and that tap is what starts the audio.

Firefox
Click the microphone icon in the address bar and allow this site. Firefox has no speaker list for a generated tone, so that list stays hidden there.
Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams
Those apps can hold the microphone before the browser does. Leave the meeting, press Test my mic here, and confirm the same device name. Then rejoin. A moving meter means the browser can hear you. The app still has its own input setting.
Call from this browser
A microphone this browser can hear is what a call from your computer needs. Open the dialer and call any phone.

An online microphone test is safe, and a microphone test online keeps the clip in memory. Close the tab and it is gone. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
