+1 explained

The Canada country code, 1, is what you dial before a Canada number when you call from abroad. It is also known as the Canada dialing code, Canada calling code, or Canada phone code. In the Canada phone number format, +1 comes first, then the area code, such as 416 for Toronto, then the local number.

Canada phone number types

The first digits of a Canada number tell you what kind of number it is: a landline, a mobile, a free number, or one that costs more to call. Here is a sample of each type of Canada phone number, as dialed inside Canada and from abroad.

Emergency number

911

911 reaches police, fire, and ambulance in most of Canada. Nunavut has no 911: you reach the RCMP on the community's three-digit exchange and 1111, and fire and ambulance have their own number in each community.

Parks Canada
  • Winnipeg ran Canada's first three-digit emergency number, 999, from 1959. It switched to 911 in 1972.

  • Nunavut has no 911. To reach the RCMP, you dial the community's first three digits, then 1111, so 979-1111 in Iqaluit. Fire and ambulance have their own number in each community.

  • Toronto's 416, 437, and 647 numbers were projected to run out, so Canada added a fourth area code, 942, starting 26 April 2025.

    TodoCanada
  • 988, Canada's national suicide and crisis line, launched toll-free by call or text on 30 November 2023.

    CAMH
  • Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949. Its numbers first shared 902 with the Maritimes, then 506 with New Brunswick, until it got its own code, 709, in 1962.

Questions about +1

What is the country code for Canada?

+1 is the country code for Canada. Canada shares it with the United States and the other places on this page, 20 countries in total by NANPA's count. The area code after it is what points to Canada.

How do I dial Canada from abroad?

Dial your exit code, then 1, then the area code and the 7-digit number, such as 00 1 613 555 0199 from most countries. From the US and the other +1 places, dial 1 and the 10 digits, with no exit code.

Can I text a Canada number?

Yes. Address it as +1, the area code, and the number. Texting from outside Canada, the US, or another NANP country, your carrier charges its international rate.

How much does it cost to call Canada?

A Canadian number does not show whether it is a mobile or a landline. The dialer on this page shows the exact price of the number you enter before you call.

Is Canada's country code the same as the US?

Yes. Canada and the United States share +1 with the other places NANPA counts among its 20 member countries. The area code right after +1, such as 416 or 604, is what marks a number as Canadian.

What is the CA country code?

CA is Canada's ISO code, used on forms and shipping labels. It is not what you dial; the number you dial starts with +1.

Why does Canada share a country code with the US?

Both joined the same telephone numbering plan, the North American Numbering Plan, when it began in 1947. Canada received 9 of its original area codes that year.

Is there a 0 to drop before a Canadian number?

No. A Canadian number has no 0 to drop. Write it as +1 and the 10 digits: the 1 that Canadians dial before a long-distance call is already the 1 in +1.

Can I call a Canadian 1-800 number from outside North America?

No. A Canadian 1-800 number cannot be reached from outside Canada, the US, and the other +1 places. Even inside that area, the owner can limit calls to Canada only.
