Cheap international calling cards: today's rates

The price per minute to landlines and mobiles in popular countries, and the minutes $10 buys. Type any other number in the dialer to see its price. The price you see is what each answered minute costs

Prices are in US dollars. The dialer shows the price of each number before you call, and billing is per started minute

Calling card fees to check before you buy

The rate printed on a card is its best case. Fees take credit before, during, and after your calls. In 2015 the FCC fined six calling card companies $5 million each for ads that hid them

  • Connection feeA connection fee or hang-up fee on each call. Cards in FTC cases took 5¢ to $1 a callNone
  • Maintenance feeA charge each week, whether you call or not. Cards in FTC cases took 49¢ to 79¢ a weekNone
  • Minute roundingEach call is rounded up to a block of several minutes, so a short call costs as much as a long onePer started minute: a call of 2 minutes 10 seconds is 3 minutes
  • Access number and service feesUp to 4¢ a minute more from a toll-free access number, and service fees on topNo access number and no service fee
  • Calls nobody answersSome cards charge even when the call does not go through. The FCC lists this as a common complaintFree. Only answered calls cost credit
  • ExpiryUnused credit is lost, for example 3 months after the first callCredit never expires

Calling cards gave less than half the minutes printed on them

The FTC bought calling cards in stores and made calls with them. On average, the cards gave less than half of the minutes printed on them

  • Minutes printed on the card1,000 min
  • FTC test of 46 cards, 2008430 min (43%)
  • FTC test of 87 cards, 2008504 min (50%)
  • FTC test of 141 cards, 2012450 min (45%)
  • Minutes the card gave
  • Minutes lost to fees

With Suparelay, a minute to a mobile in Mexico costs $0.09, the price the dialer shows. No fee takes credit between calls, and a call nobody answers costs nothing

Questions about international calling cards

What is a calling card?

A calling card is prepaid credit for phone calls, most often international calls. You pay first, then dial an access number and a PIN before the number you want. Suparelay is an online international calling card without the card: you call from your browser with no PIN.

How do international calling cards work?

You call the card's access number, type the PIN, then dial 011, the country code, and the number. The provider connects the call and takes its cost from the card's balance, together with any fees the card has.

Can you still get international calling cards?

Yes. Pharmacies, convenience stores, and grocery stores still sell them, and many websites send a PIN by email. Fewer people use them each year, as more calls move to apps such as WhatsApp.

Where can I buy international calling cards?

Convenience stores, pharmacies, grocery stores, and card websites sell international phone cards. Online, you get the PIN at once. With Suparelay, you top up on this page and call in the same minute.

Do international calling cards expire?

Most do. A common rule is 3 months after the first call, or 12 months after you buy. Suparelay credit never expires, so $5 you add today still calls next year.

What's the cheapest way to call internationally?

A WhatsApp or FaceTime call is free when both people have the app and internet. To ring a normal phone, use prepaid credit with no fees and short billing steps, and compare the full cost, not the rate on the card.

What are the best international calling cards?

The best international calling card has a low rate to your country, no connection fee or maintenance fee, short billing steps, and no expiry. Buy a small amount first and test it, as the FTC advises.

Can I buy a long distance calling card?

Yes, in stores and online. Most US phone plans now include calls inside the US, so stores now sell mostly calling cards for international calls. Suparelay calls numbers in the US and abroad from the same credit.

What is PINless calling?

PINless calling links your phone number to your account, so you skip the PIN but still dial an access number. Suparelay needs neither: you sign in once, then type the number.

Do I pay if nobody answers?

No. With Suparelay only answered calls cost credit, billed per started minute. Some calling cards charge even for calls that do not go through, which the FCC lists as a common complaint.

Do calling cards give all the minutes they promise?

Often not. In FTC tests, cards gave 43% to 50% of their printed minutes in 2008 and 45% in 2012, because fees took the rest.

What number does the person I call see?

They see a US number that belongs to Suparelay, not your own number. A call back to it does not reach you, so say who you are when they answer, or send a message first.
