How each sound in this online white noise generator sounds, how it is made, and what people often use it for
| Sound | What you hear and how it is made |
|---|---|
| White | A bright hiss, like a radio between stations. Every frequency gets the same energy. People use it to cover voices and traffic. |
| Pink | Softer than white, close to steady rain. The energy falls 3 dB per octave, so each octave has the same share. People use it for sleep and to check speakers. |
| Brown | A deep rumble with almost no hiss. The energy falls 6 dB per octave. Many people pick it as focus noise for work or study. |
| Green | A full, soft hum in the middle of the range. The name has no standard definition. Ours peaks around 500 Hz. |
| Blue | A thin, sharp hiss. The energy rises 3 dB per octave, so the high notes lead. Few people sleep to it alone, but a little of it brightens a dull mix. |
| Rain, ocean, fan, and more | Produced sound loops of rain, thunderstorm, ocean, river, forest, wind, fireplace, fan, café, train, and airplane cabin. This ambient noise mixes with a noise color to sleep or to work. |
Tips for sleep and focus
Keep the level low
Cleveland Clinic and the Sleep Foundation say long, loud listening can damage hearing. Use the lowest slider level that covers the room. If you hear ringing in your ears, see a doctor or an audiologist.
Sleep timer and fade-out
Pick No timer, 15, 30, 60, or 120 minutes. The sound fades out over the last minute, then stops, so the end does not wake you.
Dark screen at night
Tap Dark screen to turn the screen black, so no light fills the bedroom. One tap brings the player back.
Browser generator vs white noise machine
A machine sits by the bed and needs no phone. In the browser, you pay nothing, mix sounds, and get a file for other devices. Keep the phone on charge for a long night.
Questions
- What does a white noise generator do?
- It plays a steady random sound that covers short, sharp sounds such as voices, doors, or traffic. The sound plays in your browser, so you need no white noise app and no device.
- How to generate white noise?
- Give every frequency the same level and a random phase, then turn that into sound. We make ours from that exact math as a seamless loop of about 3 minutes, in 48 kHz stereo. Press Play to hear the result.
- Can I use my phone as a white noise machine?
- Yes. In the phone browser, press Play and set the timer. On an iPhone, use Safari and keep the tab open. We do not promise that the sound keeps playing when the phone is locked.
- What is a white noise machine?
- It is a small box with a speaker that plays a steady sound near a bed. A noise machine online does the same job from a phone, a tablet, or a computer.
- How to choose a white noise machine?
- Check four things: the sounds it has, a timer, how low the level goes, and a loop with no gap you can hear. The best online white noise for you is the one you can sleep through, so try each sound first.
- What is the best noise for sleep?
- No single noise is best. The Sleep Foundation says some studies found people fell asleep faster with white noise, but reviews call the evidence mixed and of low quality. If white is too sharp, try pink or brown, or sleep sounds such as rain and ocean.
- What is blue noise?
- Blue noise is the opposite of pink: its energy rises 3 dB per octave, so it sounds thin and bright. Violet noise rises 6 dB per octave. You can play blue noise, but not violet noise.
- What does each color noise do?
- Each color puts the energy in another part of the range. White is even, pink and brown lean low, green sits in the middle, and blue leans high. Mixing colors and layers changes the result: tap up to 3 sounds and set each slider.
- Can I download white noise for free?
- Yes. Each white noise download is free and needs no sign-up. Choose 10 or 30 minutes, or 1, 2, 5, or 10 hours, as MP3, M4A, FLAC, or WAV. A mix of two or three sounds saves as one WAV loop of about 3 minutes that repeats with no gap when your music player is set to repeat.
- How big are the files?
- Downloads and file sizes depend on the format. One hour is about 140 MB as MP3, 120 MB as M4A, and 690 MB as WAV. FLAC changes with the sound: about 150 MB for green noise and 500 MB for white noise. WAV stops at 5 hours, because a WAV file cannot be larger than 4 GB. For 10 hours with no loss, pick FLAC.
