Pink vs white vs brown
Three noise colors made from exact math, with the energy spread from low to high notes in three ways
| Point | Pink noise vs white noise and brown |
|---|---|
| Energy | Pink has equal energy per octave: its level falls 3 dB each time the frequency doubles. White stays flat. Brown falls 6 dB per octave. |
| Sound | Pink is a soft, full hiss, like steady rain on leaves. White is sharper. Brown is a low roar. |
| Low and high notes | Pink keeps the low notes strong and the high notes gentle, so it is the middle choice of the three. |
| Speaker and room check | Sound engineers play it to compare speakers, set levels, and find weak spots in a room, because each octave gets the same energy. |
| REM sleep | A University of Pennsylvania lab study in the journal Sleep found that the noise alone reduced REM sleep compared with a quiet night, The Conversation reported in 2026. |
| Timed bursts | Short timed bursts of this noise during deep sleep are a separate research topic, as MIT News reported in 2026. Press Play and you hear a steady sound, not timed bursts. |
Sleep well with pink noise
Babies and level
A 2014 study in the journal Pediatrics measured 14 infant sleep machines at full volume, and all were louder than the 50 dBA hospital nursery limit at 30 cm. Pink noise for babies needs the same care: the speaker away from the crib, the lowest level that works, and the timer.
Pink noise vs brown noise
Play Pink alone, then Brown alone. If pink still sounds bright to you, brown has less hiss. If brown sounds muddy, stay with pink.
No box needed
Your phone does what a pink noise machine does, and you also get a timer, a mix, and a file. Keep it on charge overnight.
Dark screen and timer
Tap Dark screen to turn the screen black. The timer fades the sound over its last minute, then stops it.
Questions
- What is pink noise?
- It is random sound with the same energy in every octave. Its level falls 3 dB each time the frequency doubles, so it sounds softer than white and brighter than brown.
- What does it sound like?
- Steady rain, wind in trees, or a waterfall heard from far away.
- What does it do?
- It covers sudden sounds with a smooth, even wash. People use it for sleep, for focus, and to test audio gear. Many pink noise benefits you read online go further than the studies, so read the next answers with care.
- Is pink noise better than white noise for sleep?
- There is no clear answer. The Sleep Foundation says some studies found people fell asleep faster with white noise, and reviews call that evidence mixed and of low quality. White noise vs pink noise is a matter of taste, so pick the one you stop noticing.
- Which is better, pink or brown noise?
- Neither is better for everyone. Pink keeps more high notes, and brown is darker. Try each for a few minutes at the same low level.
- Is it okay to play pink noise all night?
- That pink noise sleep study from Pennsylvania is a reason to use the timer instead of all-night play. Set 30 or 60 minutes, and the sound fades out and stops after you fall asleep. These sounds are not a medical device or medical advice.
- Is it good for babies?
- Research does not answer this. The known risk is the level, so keep the speaker away from the crib, use the lowest level that works, and set the timer.
- Does pink noise improve deep sleep?
- We cannot promise that. Research on deeper sleep tests short timed bursts, which is a separate topic, and the sound you play is steady. The Pennsylvania lab study found the steady noise alone reduced REM sleep.
- How do I use it to test speakers?
- Play Pink alone at a low level and walk around the room. A speaker that sounds thin, boomy, or quieter than its pair stands out. For a left and right check, use the Sound test.
