White vs pink vs brown
The same random sound with the energy spread in three ways, so play each one above to hear the change
| Point | White, pink, and brown |
|---|---|
| How it sounds | White is a bright hiss. Pink is softer, like steady rain. Brown is a deep, low roar. |
| Energy by frequency | White has equal energy at all frequencies. Pink falls 3 dB per octave. Brown falls 6 dB per octave. |
| Everyday example | White is like a radio tuned between stations. Pink is like rain on leaves. Brown is like a far waterfall. |
| What it covers | White covers high sounds such as voices and hiss. Brown covers low sounds such as traffic and engines. Pink sits between them. |
| Common use | White for sleep and for privacy in an office. Pink for sleep and speaker tests. Brown for focus, and for people who find white too sharp. |
| Other sounds to mix | Green, blue, rain, ocean, fan, and 8 more. You can mix up to 3 of the 16 sounds, each with its own slider. |
Night tips
Babies and safe levels
A 2014 study in the journal Pediatrics tested 14 infant sleep machines at full volume. All were louder than the 50 dBA hospital nursery limit at 30 cm, and 3 were louder than 85 dBA. For white noise for babies, put the speaker away from the crib, use the lowest level that works, and use the timer.
Dark screen
Many people search for a white noise black screen video. Tap Dark screen: the screen turns black and the sound goes on. One tap brings the player back.
Use the timer
White noise for sleeping works well with a timer. Set 30 or 60 minutes if you only need help to fall asleep. The sound fades out over the last minute, so the stop is soft.
Safari on iPhone
There are two ways to get iPhone white noise. iPhone Settings has iOS Background Sounds under Accessibility, then Audio and Visual. Or press Play in Safari and keep the tab open.
Questions
- What is white noise?
- It is a random sound with equal energy from the lowest hum to the highest hiss. The name comes from white light, which mixes all colors of light.
- Does white noise help you sleep?
- It can help some people, and it is good for sleep in a loud home. The Sleep Foundation says some studies found people fell asleep faster with it. Cleveland Clinic cites a 2020 review of 38 sleep studies, and reviews call the evidence mixed and of low quality. Why it may help: a steady sound makes a sudden door or car less sharp, so it is less likely to wake you.
- Is white noise bad for you?
- The main risk is volume. Long, loud listening can damage hearing, so Cleveland Clinic and the Sleep Foundation advise a low level and a timer. If you hear ringing in your ears, see a doctor or an audiologist.
- What does it do in a noisy room?
- It fills the quiet between sounds. A dog bark or a slammed door then stands out less, because your ear hears it against a steady hiss.
- Is it healthy to sleep with it every night?
- Research does not give a clear answer, and reviews call the evidence mixed. If you use it every night, keep the level low and let the timer stop it after you fall asleep. These sounds are not a medical device or medical advice.
- Is white noise bad for babies?
- The risk is the level. In the 2014 Pediatrics test, every machine at full volume was louder than the nursery limit. A baby white noise sleep setup should be quiet, far from the crib, and on a timer. Some parents say it helps babies sleep, but keep those rules either way.
- How loud should white noise for baby sleep be?
- As quiet as still works. A browser cannot measure decibels, so judge by ear. Start at the lowest slider level and raise it only until the room noise fades. Put the speaker across the room, never in the crib.
- How do I play white noise on iPhone?
- In Safari, press Play. To turn on the sound built into iOS, open Settings, then Accessibility, then Audio and Visual, then Background Sounds. Keep this tab open, because playback with the phone locked is not promised.
- Can you give me an everyday example of this sound?
- A radio tuned between stations, an old TV with no signal, and a running shower are close to it. A fan or an air vent is close too, but with more low sound.
- Do dogs like it?
- We know of no study to cite. Some owners use a steady sound to cover fireworks or street noise. Start low and watch how your dog reacts.
