Uke tuning tips
New strings stretch
Nylon strings stretch for one or two weeks, so a new ukulele goes flat fast at first. Tune it each time you play. It holds a little longer each day.
Low G and high G
In high G tuning, the G string is higher than the C string next to it. That gives the bright, classic uke sound. Low G puts that string one octave down for a deeper sound. Pick the tuning that matches the string on your uke.
Hold the phone close
A ukulele is quiet. Hold the phone 15 to 20 cm from the sound hole and turn off music in the room. A uke tuner on the phone in your hand leaves the uke on your knee.
Hear each string
Tap a string button to play its note. Match it by ear first, then let the needle confirm it. This helps a lot on a new uke that drifts while you tune.
Questions
- What are the ukulele string notes?
- In standard tuning the notes are G C E A: G4, C4, E4, and A4. The A string is 440 Hz, the same A that an orchestra tunes to.
- Which ukulele tuning should I use?
- Use standard G C E A with high G on a soprano, concert, or tenor uke. Use low G if your G string is the thickest one. Use baritone on a baritone ukulele. D tuning, A D F# B, gives a brighter sound and suits older songbooks.
- How do I tune a ukulele with the microphone?
- Allow the microphone, pick your tuning, and pluck one string. That string lights up, and you see Tune up or Tune down until it is in tune. Some people spell it ukelele tuner, and it is the same instrument.
- What if the microphone ukulele tuner does not work well?
- Move closer, pluck harder, and tune in a quiet room. Close other apps that use the microphone. You can also tap each string button and tune by ear to the tone.
- What is low G tuning?
- Low G tuning is G3 C4 E4 A4. It uses a thicker G string, one octave below standard, so the uke has a low note. Pick Low G in the list to get a low G ukulele tuner.
- How do I tune a baritone ukulele?
- Pick Baritone: D G B E. Tune the strings to D3, G3, B3, and E4. That tuning gives you a baritone ukulele tuner.
- Why does my new ukulele go out of tune?
- New nylon strings stretch, so they go flat after each tuning for the first days. Tune often, and pull each string gently away from the fretboard to help it settle.
Does my sound leave the phone?
No. This online ukulele tuner listens inside the browser tab with the Web Audio API. Nothing is uploaded or saved, and the mic turns off when you close the tab.
