M4A and WAV in short
M4A is compressed AAC. WAV is plain PCM. Converting M4A to WAV decodes the AAC once and stores every sample.
| Detail | M4A compared with WAV |
|---|---|
| Type | M4A is lossy AAC in an MP4 container. WAV is lossless, uncompressed audio. |
| File size | A song in 256 kbps AAC is about 1.9 MB per minute. As 16-bit 44.1 kHz stereo WAV it is about 10 MB per minute. |
| Voice memos | iPhone Voice Memos saves M4A. Many audio editors and transcription tools prefer WAV. |
| Sample rate | Keep uses the M4A's own rate. Set 48 kHz for video, or 44.1 kHz for music and CD. |
| Quality | There is no quality gain from AAC to WAV. The WAV is an exact copy of what the M4A decodes to. |
| Opens in | M4A plays on most devices. WAV also opens in old editors, samplers, and hardware that do not read AAC. |
Editing or transcription
Voice memo to WAV
On iPhone, open the memo in Voice Memos, tap the three dots, then Share, then Save to Files. Then choose the file and convert the voice memo to WAV.
On Windows
For M4A to WAV Windows needs nothing extra: Edge or Chrome is enough. Audacity also does it, with File, Export Audio.
Mono for one voice
A memo with one speaker sounds the same in mono, and the WAV is half the size. Set Channels to Mono in Options.
Even out the loudness
Quiet memos are hard to transcribe. Turn on Even out the loudness to raise the level without clipping.
Questions
