What a WEBM file is
WEBM is a web video format made by Google. It comes from browser recordings and screen recorders, and the sound is usually Opus audio.
| Detail | WEBM compared with MP3 |
|---|---|
| Inside | WEBM holds VP8, VP9, or AV1 video with Opus or Vorbis sound. MP3 holds sound only. |
| Where it comes from | Recordings made in Chrome and Firefox, web screen recorders, and some downloads from web pages. |
| Plays on | Browsers play WEBM. Many phones, cars, and music apps do not. MP3 plays on all of them. |
| Size | An MP3 at 192 kbps is about 1.4 MB per minute. For speech, Small file is about 1 MB per minute. |
| WEBM audio to MP3 | Your browser decodes the Opus or Vorbis track and encodes MP3. The video track is left out. |
| No sound | Some screen recordings have no audio track at all. A note then says the file has no sound. |

Questions
- Is there a good WEBM to MP3 converter I can download?
- You do not need one. The browser does the job, with no install. If you prefer a program, VLC and ffmpeg are free.
- How do I convert WEBM to MP3 with FFmpeg?
- Run ffmpeg -i in.webm -vn -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k out.mp3. The -vn flag leaves out the video.
- What is a WEBM file?
- It is an open web video file. Browsers make it when they record the screen, the camera, or a call.
- Can I convert WEBM to MP3 without a download?
- Yes. Your browser does the conversion, so there is no program to download.
- Why does my WEBM have no sound?
- The recording had no audio track. In Chrome, tick Also share tab audio when you start to share, or pick a microphone in the recorder.
- Does WEBM to MP3 lose quality?
- A little, because Opus and MP3 are both lossy. At 192 kbps it is hard to hear. For no loss, pick the format marked Original to save the Opus track as OGG.
- Are my WEBM files uploaded?
- No. Your browser reads them on your device and never sends them.
Privacy of screen recordings
Screen recordings can show private things. A WEBM to MP3 online site uploads the whole file. Your recording converts only on your device.
