MP4 and WAV compared
An MP4 is a video container with compressed sound. A WAV is the sound alone, uncompressed.
| Detail | MP4 compared with WAV |
|---|---|
| What it holds | MP4: video, sound, and sometimes subtitles. WAV: sound only, as raw PCM samples. |
| Sound inside | MP4 sound is usually AAC, a lossy codec. The WAV is that sound decoded and stored as 16-bit samples. |
| Sample rate | Video sound is usually 48 kHz. Keep leaves the rate as it is, and 44.1 kHz suits a CD. |
| File size | A minute of 16-bit 48 kHz stereo WAV is about 11.5 MB. A minute of 1080p phone video is often 60 MB or more. |
| MP4 to WAV for editing | Editors such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Audacity cut WAV with no further loss. |
| Transcription | Many transcription services and speech tools accept WAV. A mono WAV is half the size and is enough for one voice. |
Tips for video editing and transcription
Trim one part
Use Trim to keep only the part you need, such as one answer in an interview. Trim shows in Options when one file is in the list.
With VLC
For MP4 to WAV VLC uses Media, Convert and Save. Make a profile with WAV encapsulation and the WAV audio codec, then convert.
On Mac
For MP4 to WAV Mac users can convert in Safari or Chrome. QuickTime exports audio only as M4A, not as WAV.
On iPhone
In Safari, tap the drop area and pick the video from Photos. The WAV saves to the Files app.
Questions
- Is there any free program to convert MP4 to WAV?
- You can do it in the browser, with no install. To convert MP4 to WAV free, drop the video and press Convert. VLC and Audacity are free programs too.
- How do I convert MP4 to WAV in VLC?
- Choose Media, then Convert and Save, and add the MP4. Press Convert, edit a profile to use WAV, give the file a name that ends in .wav, and press Start.
- How do I convert MP4 to WAV on iPhone?
- Use Safari. Choose the video from Photos and press Convert. Tap Download to save the WAV.
- Should a WAV from a video be 48 kHz?
- Yes, for video work. Video projects use 48 kHz, and the sound in an MP4 is usually 48 kHz already, so Keep gives the same result.
- Why is the WAV larger than the MP4?
- WAV has no compression, so it is about ten times larger than the sound track inside the MP4. It is not always larger than the whole file: a long 1080p video is still bigger.
- Can I convert only part of an MP4 to WAV?
- Yes. Add one file, open Options, and move the Trim start and end. Only that part becomes the WAV.
- Are my MP4 videos uploaded?
- No. The video is read by this browser tab and never sent. That matters for interviews, meetings, and family videos.
