What M4A is
An M4A file is AAC in an MP4 container, with no video. MP3 is older and plays on more devices.
| Detail | M4A compared with MP3 |
|---|---|
| Codec | M4A holds AAC sound. MP3 holds MP3 sound. Both are lossy. |
| Where it comes from | iPhone Voice Memos, iTunes Store songs, and many Android voice recorders save M4A. |
| Size per minute | An MP3 at 128 kbps is about 1 MB per minute, and at 192 kbps about 1.4 MB. Voice memos use a low bitrate, so the MP3 can be larger than the memo. |
| Plays on | M4A plays on Apple devices, Android, and most new players. MP3 also plays on old car stereos, old MP3 players, and many upload forms. |
| Protected songs | Old iTunes songs bought before 2009 can be M4P files with DRM. The converter cannot read those. |
| Quality from AAC to MP3 | Each lossy step loses a little detail. Use Standard or High to keep that loss small. |
Convert memos on Mac and Windows
Voice memo to MP3
In Voice Memos on iPhone, tap the memo, tap the three dots, then Share, then Save to Files. Then choose the file. That turns the voice memo to MP3 on the phone itself.
With the Mac Music app
To convert M4A to MP3 on Mac with the Music app instead, set Music, Settings, Files, Import Settings to MP3 Encoder. Then select the song and choose File, Convert, Create MP3 Version.
On Windows 11
To convert M4A to MP3 Windows 11 users can use Edge or Chrome. VLC also does it, with Media, Convert and Save.
Privacy of voice recordings
Upload sites can keep a file on their server for one to eight hours. In your browser, the privacy of voice recordings is simple: they never leave the device.
Questions
- How do I convert M4A to MP3 on Mac?
- In Safari or Chrome, drop the M4A and press Convert. The MP3 goes to Downloads. The Music app can also do it, as the tip above shows.
- How can I convert M4A to MP3 on my Windows 11 PC?
- In Edge or Chrome, drop the files and press Convert. You get an M4A to MP3 converter, free and with nothing to install.
- What is the difference between M4A and MP3?
- Both are lossy. M4A uses AAC, which needs a lower bitrate for the same sound. MP3 plays on more old devices.
- Does converting M4A to MP3 lose quality?
- A little, because the sound is encoded a second time. At Standard, 192 kbps, the loss is hard to hear in speech and most music.
- Are my M4A files stored on a server?
- No. They are never sent anywhere. The browser converts them in memory and forgets them when you close the tab.
- Does the M4A converter work on a smartphone?
- Yes. It works in Safari on iPhone and in Chrome on Android, with the same options as on a computer.
- How to open an M4A file?
- Most players open it: Music and QuickTime on Mac, Media Player on Windows 11, and VLC on every system. If a device refuses it, convert it to MP3.
- How do I turn a voice memo into an MP3?
- Save the memo to Files, choose it, and press Convert. Small file, 128 kbps, is enough for speech.
Recordings stay on your device
M4A to MP3 online tools usually upload the file. Your browser reads your file and writes the MP3 itself. No network request carries your recording.
